YOU FLY IT

Once your Author Site is built, we'll turn the controls over to you. Depending on which type of Author Site you've selected — Presence, Portrait or Podium — here's what You Fly It is all about.

Blog

Writing & Publishing Blog Posts

You'll create and publish Blog Posts — a great way to connect with and build your audience. Aim for 1500 words on a topic that will resonate with your audience. You will also shoot, create, find or purchase an image for each Blog Post. Apply the proper categories & tags to your post. And, finally, include an excerpt of your post — one to two short sentences.

EVENTS CALENDAR

Writing & Publishing Event Posts

Keep your fans in the loop. Give them a heads up. Send them the 411 on all your readings, signings, interviews and other appearances in person, print and media. In your Event Posts, describe the upcoming event, how you feel about it, and what you will be reading/signing/talking about. Invite your audience to join you. Be sure to include an image in each and every Event Post, as well as the date, time and location. You'll need the exact address, but your Author Site will then provide a map and an "add this to my calendar" button for your fans to click. Wow!

FLIGHT NOTES

  • Click on Pages in the Squarespace Admin Panel.
  • Select Events Archive.
  • Click the plus sign in the top right corner to create a new Event Post.

COMMENTs

Moderating & Contributing to Your Comment Threads

If you choose to enable comments on your Blog and Event Posts, then you'll need to periodically moderate and contribute to the conversations taking place there. Your fans will love the interaction.

FLIGHT NOTES

  • Moderate comments — In your Squarespace dashboard, click on Comments (a dedicated tab just for comments). Here you can view, approve, flag and delete comments across your entire Author Site.
  • Contribute to comments — From this same dedicated Comments tab, you can respond to comments. Just click the speech bubble icon on the comment's top right, type in your response, and click Post Reply.

SOCIAL MEDIA

Connecting Your Author Site to Your Social Media

For each Blog Post and Event Post, you'll also post a note on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and LinkedIn inviting your audience to come to your Author Site to read all about it.

FLIGHT NOTES

  • Turn on Social Sharing — In the Edit Post Box of each Blog Post and Event Post, select the Social tab. All of your connected social accounts are listed. Flip the switch next to each of them to ON. Then press Save & Publish. An excerpt of your Blog Post or Event Post will show up on your social media sites, with links back to your Author Site. Yes, it's that easy.

MAILING LIST

Creating & Sending Newsletters

Your Mailing List is the most effective marketing tool in your whole Author Site. Aim for one Newsletter every two months. In your Newsletters: point out your latest blog posts, highlight your past and future events, share some behind-the-scenes info. Gotta give your most excited and loyal fans that backstage pass! Be sure to include several images in each and every Newsletter. Often times, these will be images you've already included in your published Blog Posts and Event Posts. Pro Tip: you can also send out Newsletters just to announce really big, really important stuff — like the publishing date of your new book!

FLIGHT NOTES

  • Access your MailChimp account and navigate to your Dashboard.
  • In MailChimp, Newsletters are called Campaigns. Click on Campaign in the menu bar.
  • Now select Create Campaign.
  • Then choose Regular Ol’ Campaign.
  • Select a List to send your campaign to, and click Next.
  • The Campaign Info Screen will appear. Enter the name of your campaign, an email subject, a from name, and a from email address. Click Next.
  • Now it's time to design your campaign. Select a Template.
  • Your campaign appears on the left and your editing controls on the right. Enter your content, saving at each step.
  • From the menubar, Preview your campaign; then, click Next.
  • If your campaign passes its MailChimp Inspection, click Send.
  • Click Send Now ... and high-five the monkey!

MULTIMEDIA

Creating & Publishing (Multimedia) Blog Posts

You can do this with your smart phone. You'll have a friend record you at each event. Then you'll upload that recording directly to its own (Multimedia) Blog Post if it's an audio OR, if it's a video, to a video hosting service first. In the post, describe the event at which the recording was made, what you read/signed/talked about, and how you felt it went (be positive, or funny negative). Give props to fellow writers at the event. Include links to their sites. Relay an anecdote or two that happened at the event. Encourage your fans to join you at the next one. Be sure to include an image in the post. And, most importantly, upload your recording.

FLIGHT NOTES

  • Click on Pages in the Squarespace Admin Panel.
  • Select Blog Archive page. (This could have another name depending on what you chose when we built your Author Site.)
  • Choose an existing Blog Post or create a new Blog Post in which to add your audio or video.
  • To insert a video or audio into a post, click on the Insertion Marker and choose either the Video Block or Audio Block.
    • For audio, upload your file by navigating to its location on your computer and clicking Apply.
    • For video, find the Embed Code at Wistia (your video hosting service); then, copy & paste it into the Video URL Field. Click Apply.
  • Add appropriate tags and categories by clicking the Tags and Categories Buttons.
  • Click Save if you want to come back later and make changes OR Save and Publish if you're ready to go live!
